Simple Tips For Getting Active & Healthy In The New Year

The road back to fitness and good health is best taken in small, consistent steps.

As with any journey on any road, though, there has to be a definite start in order to get where you want to be.

Carson Valley Medical Center Physician Assistant Lara St. John offers some simple strategies to get back in the game in the video below.

Not sure where to start?

Focus on what you used to enjoy, or on what you think you might enjoy, and build from there. If it doesn’t sound fun to you, the challenge will be that much greater. Do what interests you.

Be realistic and be consistent. Very few can  just jump in out of the cold and work out four or five times a week. At least not without significant injury or fatigue risk. Start with simple, attainable goals — achieve them and increase your work load. Small victories build much more confidence than bigger defeats.

Movement > Exercise. Put the fun back into moving and being active. The things you enjoy are the things you are more than likely to continue. And movement tends to lead to more movement.

Stay simple! Start with parking at the end of the parking lot and cashing in on the extra steps. Take the stairs instead of the elevators. Build challenges into the little things that are already a part of your day. Small, consistent changes form better habits, which add up to big lifestyle overhauls.
