Carson Valley Medical Center is proud to support the Nevada Cancer Coalition’s Paint Nevada Pink initiative.
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, healthcare providers, radiologists, breast surgeons and advocates from around Northern Nevada have teamed up in an effort to heighten awareness of the importance of early detection of breast cancer while improving the region’s breast cancer screening rates, decreasing late-stage breast cancer diagnoses and improving time from diagnosis to treatment.
The effort was recently commemorated by the participating organizations as the Reno Arch, one of Northern Nevada’s most iconic landmarks, was lit up in pink for the month of October.
Collaboratively, the region-wide coalition recommends the following parameters for breast cancer screenings:
Women 25 or older should undergo formal risk assessment for breast cancer.
Women 40 or older with an average risk of breast cancer should initiate yearly screening mammography.
Women with a higher-than-average risk of breast cancer should undergo yearly screening mammography and be offered yearly supplemental imaging; this screening should be initiated at a risk-based age.
Screening mammography should cease when life expectancy is <10 years.
Earlier this year, Carson Valley Medical Center debuted 3D mammography technology (also known as true breast tomosynthesis). This technology gives everyone their best chance for an early and accurate diagnosis, as the resulting clearer images help to see inside the breast layer by layer to detect tumors better than standard 2D mammography alone. Simply put, 3D mammography leaves breast cancer with no place to hide.
You can schedule your annual mammogram at Carson Valley Medical Center by calling 775-782-1533 or visit www.cvmchospital.org/pink for more information about discounted rates in October.
